SCIENCE
In third grade, we will be completing THREE units of study: Structures of Life, Light and Sound Waves, and Water.
Water
Students experiment with water to learn about surface tension, condensation, evaporation, and the forces of water. They apply individual concepts of water to the water cycle.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Experimenting with items that ABSORB and/or REPELL water!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
How does the size of a drop water and the steepness
of a slope effect the speed water travels downhill?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Observing how water EXPANDS and CONTRACTS
by making thermometers.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
3A as CONTRACTED(cold) water molecules
As ROOM temperature molecules
As EXPANDED (hot) water molecules
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Problem solving how to use the force of water
to raise a large alligator clip.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Combining ALL our knowledge of water
into the Water Cycle.

Structures of Life
In this unit students observe, compare, categorize, and care for a selection of organisms, and in so doing they learn to identify properties of plants and animals. They thoroughly investigate seeds and the effects that water has on them. Students create a hydroponic garden to observe the life cycle of a bean plant. They sort and group organisms on the basis of observable properties. Students investigate structures of the organisms and learn how some of the structures function in growth and survival. They observe and record the structures of a crayfish and bess beatle.

Light and Sound Waves
Students expeiment with light to learn about its properties. They learn how light can be absorbed, reflected, and refracted.
In the Sound portion of the unit, students learn to discriminate between sounds, explore sound generators and musical instruments to discover what causes sound and how pitch changes.
